Resident Evil 6

On January 19th Capcom officially announced “Resident Evil 6″. With a release date of November 20, 2012 gamers will be able to get their hands on the latest in the beloved series sooner than expected. Hiroyuki Kobayashi who has been a producer at Capcom working on such titles as “Devil May Cry”, “Dino Crisis 2 & 3″, “Killer 7″, and “Resident Evil 4″ along with a few other high profile games, is leading the development team.

Per the press release from Capcom, the plot is as follows: “It has been ten years since the Raccoon City incident and the President of the United States has decided to reveal the truth behind what took place in the belief that it will curb the current resurgence in bioterrorist activity. Due to be by the President’s side is his personal friend and Raccoon City survivor, Leon S. Kennedy, but when the venue suffers a bioterrorist attack, Leon is forced to face a President transformed beyond recognition and make his hardest ever decision. At the same time, Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance member Chris Redfield arrives in China, itself under threat of a bioterrorist attack. With no country safe from these attacks and the ensuing outbreaks, the entire world’s population is united by a common fear that there is no hope left.”

After watching the trailer it has been revealed that both characters ‘Leon Kennedy’ and ‘Chris Redfield’ are two of the main protagonists. There is also a third character that players will assumedly take control of. At this time his identity is not known. From what I’ve seen, it feels like the game will be a cross between “Resident Evil 4″ and “Resident Evil 5″ being action oriented, with a heavy dose of survival horror making it’s well deserved return.

Hiroyuki Kobayashi, the Executive Producer on Resident Evil 6 is quoted saying “From the outset the team’s intention was to create an experience that delivers a gripping storyline, tense single-player and co-op action all set against a constant theme of horror. We are calling this fusion dramatic horror and are confident it will resonate with both existing fans of the series as well as newcomers.”

This is letting us know that co-op is definitely making it’s return to the series. Which I personally don’t mind, being that I played through ‘RE 5′ both single player and co-op and had an enjoyable time. Something that the fans have been clamoring for is the ability to walk and aim/shoot at the same time. At around 1:17 into the trailer ‘Leon Kennedy’ seems to be walking backwards, aiming and firing all at once. The gameplay shown also seems to introduce a new sprint ability. The section that revolves around ‘Leon’ looks to harken back on the plot from “Resident Evil 2″ and the Raccoon City incident. ‘Chris Redfield’ deals with the outbreak in China, a setting for the new game that has been rumored for a few months now.

I personally am excited for this title. The “Resident Evil” franchise is going stronger than ever with the upcoming releases of “Resident Evil: Revelations” for the 3DS, “Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City” for the PS3 and 360, and the upcoming film “Resident Evil: Retribution”. “Resident Evil 6″ will be released on the PS3 and 360, as well as a PC version which will launch shortly after. Of course there will be the obligatory pre-order game bonuses from Gamestop, Best Buy, and Amazon.com. Details for what that includes will be made by Capcom at a later time.
