Yo Joe! IDW’s Cobra Command series is telling this story across three of their GI Joe books. Each book moves the story quite well and sequentially tells the story from the perspective of the respective book. In IDW’s Cobra we see the action from Cobra Commander, Destro and the Baroness’s perspective, In SnakeEyes we see what the silent protagonists is going through and in GI Joe we see whats happening with Hawk, Duke, Scarlet and the rest of the Joe’s.
Is there cause to stretch this story across all three books? Indeed! Cobra Commander has basically nuked the Southeast Asian nation of Nanzhao and is currently claiming sovereignty over the country. SnakeEye’s was presumed dead in the initial attack, but has joined forces with his arch nemesis StormShadow who is currently at odds with Cobra and is seeking to bring it down. Classic the enemy of my enemy is my friend scenario. Now Cobra Commander is threatening to continue using his weapons of mass destruction on other parts of the world if the Joe’s don’t back off.
The art varies across the books but for the most part it is done exceptionally well. The story is the real draw to this series and don’t think that because I brought you up to speed that it’s not worth picking up the previous 8 issues. The plot to this arc is just as intricate as any James Bond, Jason Borne, or Jack Bauer adventure. If you grew up on GI Joe and believe that “knowing is half the battle” then get to know this grown up version of the Joe’s!
