The last issue I reviewed out of this series was #12, #13 was kind of confusing and more of a set up issue for what was going on in Snake Eyes’ head. In any case Snake Eyes is presumed dead by the Joe’s, all of the Joe’s except for Helix that is! In actuality Snake Eyes has re-joined his old ninja clan, The Arashakage and under the perception that “the enemy of my enemy is my friend” Storm Shadow welcomes him with open arms. It is unclear what Snake Eyes true intentions are but his first mission was to assassinate Zartan. On his first attempt in issue #13 Storm Shadow sent along a gaggle of ninja in Snake Eyes’ charge, all of which Snake Eyes personally dismembered before going at it alone. Using his mastery of disguise Zartan narrowly escapes. On his second attempt in issue #14 Starm Shadow sends Rika, Rika is the female Ninja assigned to see to Snake Eyes every need while he is with the Arashakage. Worth mentioning, Snak Eyes killed Rika’s husband in a previous encounter.
Writer Chuck Dixon is effectively conveying the intentions of this silent protagonist via his supporting cast and that in itself makes this book unique. Not mentioned (and a good enough reason for you to pick this book up) in this review, but the dialogue between Zartan and Cobra Command as well as the overall situation was enkindling me thinks! What’s happening with that situation gives the readers a fly on the wall perspective of the newly formed world power that is Cobra.
In previous books I complained about the art being too dark for its readers to see what’s actually going on in action sequences. An improvement has definitely been made, Robert Atkins and Atilio Rojo are credited as the artists on the cover and, in my opinion he owned this book! The shadows are used sparing and effectively allowing readers to take in the full effect of the panels. There are a few action sequences where he even took out the back ground all together and Snake Eyes black and sliver uniform jumped off of the page when contrasted with the all white back.
This book has gone from a 7.8 to a 9.5! and LOL at the nod to Final Fantasy! More Snake Eyes Please!!!
