This is one of those books that no one ever though would be written but always thought “how cool would that be!” Well the guys at IDW pulled it off and now Trekkies and… people who really really really like Doctor Who are getting their geek on across galaxies and time!
Assimilation2, the subtitle says it all! Yes, there are Borg in this book, but not just any Borg! These over achieving androids (well actually cyborgs, but androids just sounded cooler) aren’t interested in assimilating anyone! They have a vaporize first assimilate later attitude and they brought frieds! The fist issue simple sets up a scenario that is interesting enough to get us readers to anticipate the next issue. That said if you’re planning to follow this series it is a must read.
I can’t tell if the art style is stylialized photography, paint or a combination of the two but it really looks cool and it’s clearly evident that the artist J.K. Woodward put a substantial amount of effort into it. The sequentials are well done, you may back track but not often enough to cry about it. There are a few sequences with a phenomenal motion effect driving the panels. I always like it when the artist gives the reader a since of motion on a still page.
The only beef I have with this book is how the callouts stand out so much. I suppose it’s due to the photo realistic art style, but It was really a distraction for me. That said, the text is probably the most easily forgivable features of any book and I think most fanboys will easily get over it.
