Every now and then a game comes out that is just too cool for school. Little Big Planet Karting is one of those games.
Recently a friend of mine was invited to join the Beta test for LBP Karting, but was such a sweetheart he offered me the chance instead. I was totally stoked about it when I saw the previews at E3, so of course I jumped on it. It is one of the few games I can actually play without feeling like an idiot because I suck. I also promised him I would write a review for Gamer Indepth on my experience with it.
The game is a hoot for sure. It reminds me of a mixture of ModNation and Little Big Planet with all the perks. I played on my own just to check things out and it was great. The beginning stages to get you used to the controls are simple and quick. The modifications you can make to your Sackboy and Race vehicle are just fun. Right now I am cruising around in a modified sardine can and it just cracks me up every time I see it. I tell ya, there is nothing quite like using your grappling hook as you and your car fly through the air in some awesome jumps. It is easy to gain your power ups with drifting techniques, but I did have a little trouble shielding myself from being blow up when shot at by other players during the race.
The crashes are fun too, you quickly spawn back into the race without losing much ground. When you create your own race tracks, you can choose to utilize weapons, power ups or just keep it a flat out race to the finish. That comes in really handy for us folks that can’t do two things at once but still love to play games. Personally I tried a neon themed track someone built and it was totally awesome. The creativity allowed within the game is right up there with just about anything you can do in LBP and ModNation Racers. I also enjoyed the fact that you can incorporate a challenge into your tracks. The one I tried involved gathering eggs and returning them to the nest before time ran out or someone blew me up.
While I am still fairly new at it, there was one thing I noticed I would like to see changed. I have a Sackgirl created in LBP that did not transfer over to Karting like it did when I started playing LBP2. I am hoping that will change in the final version since I really like my original creation. Even if it doesn’t, the dress up options are great in Karting too. They even remembered to put some stuff in for us girls!
Either way, I can totally see this becoming a huge hit upon it’s release. LBP players are loyal to a fault, and I am sure you will all love this newest edition to the LBP family of fun! I honestly can’t wait to try my hand at designing some tracks and playing with my friends online. Hope you and your family all enjoy it as much as I do.
